How to Calculate Discounts: Formula & Methods
A discount represents a percentage reduction from the original list price of a product or service. To calculate a discount by hand:
Discount Amount = Original Price × (Discount% ÷ 100)
Final Price = Original Price − Discount Amount
Example: 30% Off an $80 Jacket
- Multiply the original price by 0.30:
$80 × 0.30 = $24(Amount Saved). - Subtract the savings from the original price:
$80 − $24 = $56(Final Sale Price).
